Feminine Sexuality and the Work of the Negative.

The present paper discusses the intricate development of feminine sexuality by drawing on the ideas of André Green. The paper's main argument is that feminine sexuality is unique in being dependent on the creation of a representation of an internal empty space (as an ontological entity). This takes place through "the work of the negative" and involves an instinctual movement of "double reversal," by which the drive directed at the object helps the subject establish their own body as a source of pleasure. The author will argue that the combination of these two processes, defined in this paper as "the work of the feminine," is a prerequisite of the subject's capacity to structure themselves as having a sense of internal abundance, vitality, and power that is grounded in a receptive sexual position that is relevant to both sexes. The paper will conclude by presenting clinical material demonstrating how "the work of the feminine" manifests in the way the vagina is represented in feminine sexuality. As an afterthought, the paper will describe Green's unique contribution in relation to Winnicott's contribution and to the different ways in which these two authors address the manner in which the subject comes to dwell in their body.

O trabalho do negativo e suas vinculações com as pulsões de vida e de morte / The work of the negative and its relationship to the life and death drives / Le travail du négatif et ses liens avec les pulsions de vie et de mort

Pretendemos no presente trabalho investigar algumas contribuições originais de André Green trazidas pelo conceito de "trabalho do negativo", a partir de suas vinculações com as metas das pulsões de vida e de morte, resultando no que o autor designou de "função objetalizante" e "função desobjetalizante". Considerando o papel do objeto primário para a constituição psíquica do sujeito, tomamos o desligamento por ele operado no trabalho do negativo como eixo de compreensão, propondo uma leitura na qual a função desobjetalizante desse objeto estaria também associada à sua própria pulsão de vida.

This paper analyzes some of Andre Green's original contributions regarding the concept of the "work of the negative", particularly its relationship to "the objectalizing and disobjectalizing function" of the life and death drives. It also stresses the fundamental role of the primary object's investment for the psychic constitution of the subject, indicating however that the object's disobjectalizing function is as primordial as the objectalizing one and can also be put to the service of life drives.

Dans ce texte, les auteurs analysent les contributions uniques d'André Green sur le concept de "travail du négatif" à partir de son lien avec les objectifs des pulsions de vie et de mort dans le sens de ce que l'auteur a appelé "la fonction objectalisante" et "la fonction désobjectalisante". Considérant le rôle de l'objet primaire dans la constitution psychique du sujet, les auteurs font l'hypothèse de considérer le desinvestissement de l'object opéré par le travail du négatif, sa fonction désobjectalisante, comme manifestation de la pulsion de vie.

Negative hallucinations, dreams and hallucinations: The framing structure and its representation in the analytic setting.

This paper explores the meaning of a patient's hallucinatory experiences in the course of a five times a week analysis. I will locate my understanding within the context of André Green's ideas on the role of the framing structure and the negative hallucination in the structuring of the mind. The understanding of the transference and countertransference was crucial in the creation of meaning and enabling the transformations that took place in the analytic process. Through a detailed analysis of a clinical example the author examines Bion's distinction between hysterical hallucinations and psychotic hallucinations and formulates her own hypothesis about the distinctions between the two. The paper suggests that whilst psychotic hallucinations express a conflict between life and death, in the hysterical hallucination it is between love and hate. The paper also contains some reflections on the dramatic nature of the analytic encounter.

O objetivo deste encontro foi o desenvolvimento de sua teorização sobre o trabalho do negativo. Dois eixos foram seguidos, o desenvolvimento teórico do conceito proposto por André Green e a utilização deste conceito na prática clínica(AU)

The paper presents the transcription of the meeting-conference held at the University Paris 7, in 2009, with the presence of André Green. The purpose of this meeting was the development of his theorizing about the work of the negative. Two strands were followed, the theoretical development of the concept proposed by André Green and the use of this concept in the clinical practice(AU)

Tradicionalmente definida como traumática, como o que esgarça a rede representacional e alimenta a compulsão à repetição, levando o psiquismo ao esgotamento e à dissolução, a pulsão de morte apresenta, mais profundamente, uma outra face que é preciso sublinhar e que constitui o objeto central deste artigo. Se ela realiza um trabalho do negativo, a negatividade que ela expressa impulsiona a subjetivação, pois sua atividade e seus efeitos são absolutamente necessários, entre outros, para a construção do duplo limite psíquico (Green) e para a realização do primeiro trabalho psíquico verdadeiro (Rosenberg). Eis o paradoxo que pretendemos investigar: somente através dos desligamentos, dos vazios, das divisões e das separações gerados pela pulsão de morte os processos de simbolização podem proliferar, se enriquecer e o psiquismo pode se complexificar. Iniciamos analisando a pulsão de morte como força disruptiva para, em seguida, nos determos nas noções de ligação e de desligamento. Finalmente, demonstramos a necessidade de pensar a negatividade como necessária e fundamental para os processos de subjetivação.

Traditionally defined as traumatic, as what frays apart representational network and feeds the compulsion to repeat, taking the psychism to exhaustion and dissolution, the death drive presents another face which must be stressed and that is the central object this article. If it performs the work of the negative, the negativity it expresses boosts subjectivation because its activity and its effects are absolutely necessary, among others, for the construction of the double psychic limit (Green) and the achievement of the first real psychic work (Rosenberg). This is the paradox that we intend to investigate: only through the shutdowns, the emptinesses, the divisions and separations generated by the death drive, the symbolization processes can proliferate, enrich itselfes and the psyche can complexify. We start analyzing the death drive as a disruptive force. Then we describe the notions of linking and unlinking. Finally, we demonstrate the need to think negativity as necessary and fundamental to the subjective processes.

Tradicionalmente definida como traumática, como lo que deshilacha la red de representaciones y alimenta la compulsión a la repetición, teniendo el agotamiento y disolución psíquicos, la pulsión de muerte presenta, más profundamente, otra cara que debe ser estresada y que es el objeto central de este texto. Si ella realiza un trabajo de lo negativo, la negatividad que ella expresa estimula la subjetivación porque su actividad y sus efectos son absolutamente necesarios, entre otros, para la construcción del doble límite psíquico (Green) y para llevar a cabo el primer trabajo psíquico real (Rosenberg). Esta es la paradoja de que tenemos la intención de investigar: sólo a través de las paradas, los vacíos, las divisiones y las separaciones generadas por la pulsión de muerte, los procesos de simbolización pueden proliferar, enriquecer y la psique puede complejizar-se. Comenzamos con el análisis de la pulsión de muerte como una fuerza disruptiva para, a continuación, nos detenernos en las nociones de conexión y desconexión. Por último, demostramos la necesidad de pensar la negatividad como una condición necesaria y fundamental para los procesos subjetivos.

Distanciando-se do modelo pós-freudiano anglo-saxão, que dá às relações de objeto e à díade mãe-bebê um lugar primordial na fundação do aparelho psíquico, Green aposta na potência da criação de um novo modelo teórico-clínico contemporâneo que empreenda uma costura fecunda entre a perspectiva relacional e a pulsionalidade, partindo da noção de terceiridade como matriz fundadora do psiquismo. Distancing himself from the post-Freudian Anglo-Saxon model, which gives the object relations and the mother-infant dyad a prime place in the foundation of the psychic apparatus, Green invests in the power of creating a new contemporary theoretical and clinical model to undertake an fruitful seam between the relational perspective and the pulsionality, starting from the notion of thirdness as the founding mother of the psyche. The father falls, always been, the mother-child relationship, as a figure of absence, to occupy a place in mind and desire of the mother, setting up a primary triangulation. The maternal role, thus to behave itself the mark of the father as processuality, operates not only in the record of presence, but also as a structuring negativity, essential for the mother to become an object that lets herself get erased.(AU)

The countertransference: When painful traumatic traces sustain the countertransference and reveal themselves to the psychoanalyst 14 years later!

Although she experienced, as did the many psychoanalysts before her, the countertransferential dynamics of disgust towards a patient presenting great deficiency in terms of mentalization capacity, the author strives to understand what urged her to tolerate the patient, to invest in her and lead her to develop a capacity for internalization, after 6 years of analytic work filled with transgressive-transferential acting-out. Fourteen years later, she becomes aware of the way in which the revival of some grief related to traumatic traces in her own lived experience, sustained, without her knowledge, a saviour/countertransference, creating a specific transferential-countertransferential spiral which rescued a situation whose advent could have been compromised. This could happen thanks to what she refers to as the unique inter-relation between her and this particular patient.

This paper investigates the operations of libidinal disinvestment put into play by the death drive in the reality of the aging male. We point out the concept of the death instinct in psychoanalysis and present Green's theory on the work of the negative, emphasizing the dead mother complex as a possible form of symbolization of frustration and loss caused by aging. Clínica dos primórdios e processos de simbolização primários / Clinic of the early infancy and the primary processes of symbolization / Clínica de los comienzos y los procesos de simbolización primarios

A reflexão sobre a clínica dos primórdios nos permite revisitar as concepções psicanalíticas sobre a constituição do sujeito e ressaltar a importância das relações intersubjetivas na constituição do psiquismo, apontando para uma articulação entre a dimensão pulsional e a qualidade das relações entre sujeito e objeto no início da vida. Neste texto, procuramos ampliar a noção de representação para nela incluir as experiências sensoriais e não verbais do bebê, visto que a subjetividade se constrói ao longo de um processo cujo elemento fundamental é a experiência compartilhada com o outro. As contribuições de R. Roussillon e A. Green apontam para dois elementos que devem se articular para favorecer os processos de simbolização primários: a qualidade de presença continente e sensível do objeto, assim como a importância da constituição do negativo, resultante do apagamento do objeto primário e de sua transformação em estrutura enquadrante. Assim, se a presença do objeto é imprescindível para possibilitar a representação de sua ausência, o trabalho do negativo é igualmente fundamental para permitir a instauração dos limites entre interno/externo e entre as instâncias psíquicas.

The discussion on the clinic of the early infancy makes it possible to review classical psychoanalytic conceptions about the constitution of the subject and to emphasize the importance of the intersubjective relations in the beginning of the psychic life, indicating an important relationship between the drive theory and the early object relations. The paper aims to broaden the notion of representation to include the sensory and non-verbal communication between the baby and his primary objects, based on the fact that the process of subjectivation is constructed through the experiences that are shared between the infant and his primary others. The contributions of R. Roussillon and A. Green indicate that the quality of early interactions are extremely important to facilitate the representation of the absence of the object. Thus, the symbolizing function of the object is at the same time the constitution of its affective presence as well as its capacity to become a containing structure through the work of the negative.

La reflexión sobre los primeros días nos permite revisitar los puntos de vista del psicoanálisis en la constitución del sujeto y destacamos la importancia de las relaciones interpersonales en la constitución de la psique, que apunta a una relación entre la dimensión de la unidad de calidad e de las relaciones entre sujeto y objeto a temprana edad. En este trabajo se busca ampliar la noción de representación a fin de incluir las experiencias sensoriales y no verbales del bebé, ya que la subjetividad se construye sobre un proceso cuyo elemento clave es la experiencia compartida con los demás. Las contribuciones de R. Roussillon y A. Green a dos elementos que deben ser articulados para favorecer los procesos de simbolización tempranos: la calidad del continente y la presencia sensible del objeto, así como la importancia de la constitución de lo apagamiento del objeto que resulta do trabajo del negativo y su transformación en la estructura encuadrante. Por lo tanto, la presencia del objeto es esencial para permitir la representación de su ausencia, el trabajo del negativo es también esencial para permitir el establecimiento de límites entre interior / exterior y entre instancias psíquicas.

Os autores expõem a sua compreensão da contribuição de André Green para uma teoria psicossomática. Esta adquire seu significado na aproximação entre os fatos psicossomáticos e os estados-limites. O marco conceitual dentro do qual André Green propõe sua compreensão dos transtornos psicossomáticos é o trabalho do negativo. Foi dentro desse marco que ele expôs suas hipóteses acerca dos processos psicossomáticos: todas elas repousam na ação da pulsão de morte e de sua função desobjetalizante. Podemos encontrar entre Green e Marty um parentesco de pensamento, mas também divergências teóricas que expomos aqui.

The authors expose their understanding of André Green’s contribution for psychosomatic theory. It acquires its meaning in the proximity of psychosomatic facts to the borderline states. The conceptual framework within which André Green proposes his understanding of the psychosomatic disorders is the work of the negative. It was within this framework that he presented his hypothesis on the psychosomatic processes: they are all based over the action of death instinct and its deobjectalizing function. We may find in Green and Marty parallels in thinking, but also theoretical disagreements which are exposed here.

Los autores exponen su comprensión del aporte de André Green a una teoría psicosomática. Esta adquiere su significado en la aproximación entre los hechos psicosomáticos y los estados límites. El marco conceptual dentro del cual André Green propone su comprensión de los trastornos psicosomáticos es el trabajo de lo negativo. Dentro de ese marco expuso sus hipótesis acerca de los procesos psicosomáticos: todas ellas radican en la acción de la pulsión de muerte y de su función desobjetalizante. O autor propõe uma reflexão sobre a destrutividade em relação à dualidade pulsional e ao imperativo de inscrição, sob a tutela do qual a psique realiza suas diversas modalidades de trabalho tanto diurno quanto noturno. Esta reflexão se apoia nas contribuições de André Green, principalmente no trabalho do negativo, confrontadas com as proposições de Freud que situam uma negatividade no cerne da pulsionalidade, pela tendência ao retorno a um estado anterior até alcançar o inorgânico, que é próprio de toda pulsão. A destrutividade manifesta-se cada vez que o trabalho psíquico encontra dificuldade em sua realização. Pode-se deduzir que a operação específica de qualquer trabalho psíquico é uma operação de assassinato, fundadora, no melhor dos casos, da vida psíquica e da cultura, mas que pode também contribuir para todos os destinos funestos e mortíferos constitutivos da psicopatologia.

The author proposes a reflection on destructiveness in regard to instinct duality and the imperative of inscription, under the protection of which psyche performs its many working modalities at day as well as night time. Such reflections are supported in the contributions by André Green, specially on the work of the negative, compared to Freud’s proposals that place a negativeness at the core of instinct, due to the tendency to go back to a previous state until reaching the inorganic, pertinent to every instinct. Destructiveness manifests itself each time the work of psyche meets hindrances. One may deduct that the specific operation of any psyche work is an operation of murdering, foundational, in the best situations, of psychic life and culture, but that may also contribute for every gloomy and mortiferous destination that constitute psychopathology.

El autor propone una reflexión sobre la destructividad en relación a la dualidad pulsional y al imperativo de inscripción, bajo cuya tutela la psiquis realiza sus distintas modalidades de trabajo tanto diurno como nocturno. Esta reflexión se apoya en los aportes de André Green, principalmente en el trabajo de lo negativo, confrontados a las proposiciones de Freud que sitúan una negatividad en el cerne de la pulsionalidad, por la tendencia al retorno a un estado anterior hasta alcanzar a lo inorgánico que es lo propio de toda pulsión. This paper starts from the assumption of an unbreakable link between drive and object and discusses the structuring and pathological effects of the work of the negative, an expression of the death drive, in the beginnings of psychic existence. When well succeeded the work of the negative makes it possible for the object to be erased and allows for the appearance of psychic representations and substitute objects. The failure of the work of the negative in borderline patients, however, hinders the constitution of the structuring void and interferes with thought processes. Psychic anesthesia, drive decathexis, splitting and extrarepresentational outlets are some of the pathological manifestations that emerge showing that the primary object has not been erased, a main characteristic of the borderline pathology(AU)

This paper starts from the assumption of an unbreakable link between drive and object and discusses the structuring and pathological effects of the work of the negative, an expression of the death drive, in the beginnings of psychic existence. When well succeeded the work of the negative makes it possible for the object to be erased and allows for the appearance of psychic representations and substitute objects. The failure of the work of the negative in borderline patients, however, hinders the constitution of the structuring void and interferes with thought processes. Psychic anesthesia, drive decathexis, splitting and extrarepresentational outlets are some of the pathological manifestations that emerge showing that the primary object has not been erased, a main characteristic of the borderline pathology

Este trabajo parte de la premisa de una conexión indisoluble entre pulsión y objeto para discutir los efectos estructurales y patológicos del trabajo del negativo, como expresión de la pulsión de muerte, en los inicios de la constitución psíquica. Cuando tiene éxito, el trabajo del negativo permite el olvido del objeto primario, facilitando el surgimiento de representaciones psíquicas y objetos substitutos. En los pacientes borderlines, sin embargo, el fracaso del trabajo del negativo impide la formación del vacío estructural afectando los procesos de pensamiento. La anestesia psíquica, lo desligamiento pulsional, las salidas extrarepresentacionales y la división son algunas de las manifestaciones patológicas que, entonces, se presentan mostrando que el objeto primario no fue olvidado, característica central de las patologías límites

Este texto corresponde à conferência de abertura do colóquio em homenagem a André Green, “O pai na psicanálise contemporânea”, por ocasião da comemoração dos seus oitenta anos. Propõe uma visão panorâmica da obra deste autor, seguindo o fio temático da questão do pai, do Édipo e da terceiridade na teoria e clínica psicanalíticas. Procura historicizar seu pensamento situando-o em relação a J. Lacan e ao movimento pós-lacaniano, finalizando com a elaboração de um novo modelo psicanalítico contemporâneo, contextualizando, assim, suas idéias mais originais. Destacam-se, nesta trajetória, seus estudos sobre as mudanças ocorridas na clínica psicanalítica das estruturas não-neuróticas (complexo da mãe-morta, posição fóbica central), e as suas idéias sobre a terceiridade, a triangularidade aberta com um terceiro substituível e a bi-triangularidade.(AU)

This text is the opening lecture of a symposium in honor of André Green, on his 80th birthday: “The Father in contemporary psychoanalysis”. It proposes a panoramic view through this author’s works, following the thematic thread about the question of the father, Oedipus, and thirdness in psychoanalytic theory and practice. It aims at historicizing his thinking relating it with J. Lacan and the post-Lacanian movement, leading to the development of a new contemporary psychoanalytic model, to contextualize his most originals ideas. This overview highlights his study about the changes in psychoanalytic practice with non-neurotic structures (dead mother complex, central phobic position), and his ideas about thirdness, open triangularity with a replaceable third, and bi-triangularity.(AU)

Este texto corresponde a la conferencia de apertura del coloquio de homenaje a André Green en ocasión de su 80 años: “El padre en el psicoanálisis contemporáneo”. Propone un recorrido panorámico por la obra de este autor siguiendo el hilo temático de la cuestión del padre, el Edipo y la terceridad en la teoría y en la clínica psicoanalítica. Procura historizar su pensamiento situandolo en relación con J. Lacan y el movimiento poslacaniano, desembocando en la elaboración de un nuevo modelo psicoanalítico contemporáneo, para contextualizar sus ideas más originales. O trabalho do negativo e a transmissão psíquica / The work of the negative and the psychic transmission

Este trabalho discute inicialmente o conceito de negativo em psicanálise, a partir das contribuições de André Green, apontando tanto para seus aspectos patológicos quanto estruturantes para o processo de constituição psíquica. A seguir discorre sobre a importância do trabalho do negativo para a investigação da transmissão psíquica transgeracional, principalmente quando conteúdos negativados e não representados são transmitidos psiquicamente através de gerações, nos moldes do objeto que não se deixa apagar, causando prejuízos consideráveis nas constituições subjetivas. Nesses casos, presenciamos o fracasso da ação estruturante do negativo que pode se apresentar na face defensiva de pactos denegativos, em certos contratos narcisistas e também na telescopagem de gerações.(AU)

This paper initially discusses the concept of the negative in psychoanalysis, from the point of view of Andre Green, pointing at both its pathological and structuring aspects that contribute to the process of psychic constitution. Next it emphasizes the importance of the work of the negative for the investigation of transgenerational psychic transmission especially in the case of negated and non-representational contents which are psychically transmitted through generations, in a similar way as the object that doesnït allow to be forgotten, damaging the psychic sphere. In those instances we are dealing with the failure of the structuring function of the negative which can be represented by the defensive aspect of the denegative pact, in certain narcissistic contracts and telescoping of generations.(AU)
